Offline 3D Campus Navigation
Putting routes, moving objects and campus geography into one coherent 3D navigation experience.
Navigating a campus is not just a line between two points. Roads, intersections, buildings, vehicles and pedestrians all influence how people understand the space around them. A static route is useful, but it does not fully explain what the route means within a living environment.
This project connected GIS coordinates with a Three.js scene so geographic positions could be represented in the corresponding 3D space. Route planning, vehicle and pedestrian states, and intersection information could then share a common spatial reference.
For someone exploring the campus, navigation becomes part of the environment. A route can be seen in relation to the roads and structures around it, making the next direction easier to interpret.
The solution also supports offline operation, making it suitable for an environment where reliance on public map services is undesirable. Mapping and scene interaction remain available within the deployed application.
The system was launched and accepted by the client, combining geographic conversion, path planning and dynamic scene information into one experience.
The wider opportunity is in how we explain space digitally: a good navigation interface should help people recognize where they are, not simply tell them which way to turn.
