ENGINEERING NOTE / SPATIAL-DATA-20MPARENT // Fiber network inspection GIS

SECTION // 01 · THE PROBLEM

The problem

The mapping approach could not effectively display more than 20 million point, line and polygon features.

Inspection workflows still required interactive map views, feature queries and spatial context at this scale.

C01

The dataset needed to be served through manageable spatial storage and services, not delivered directly into the browser all at once.

C02

Reusable GIS interfaces would help the wider application team avoid rebuilding the same functionality.

SECTION // 02 · THE MECHANISM

Solution design and delivery path

TRACK 01

Separate spatial storage, service publication and client display using PostgreSQL/PostGIS, GeoServer and WMS.

TRACK 02

Define responsibilities for data preparation, feature queries, rendering and styling.

TRACK 03

Make common spatial operations accessible through clear GIS interfaces.

SECTION // 03 · IMPLEMENTATION CONTRACT

Implementation approach

01

Organize spatial features in PostgreSQL/PostGIS.

VERIFIABLE
02

Publish map layers and services through GeoServer.

VERIFIABLE
03

Connect front-end map rendering, styling and feature queries to the service layer.

VERIFIABLE
04

Expose reusable GIS utilities for application features that rely on spatial operations.

SECTION // 04 · OUTCOME

What this makes possible

The inspection application could work with a service-based spatial data foundation instead of pushing the entire dataset to the client.

The same service interfaces became a practical basis for additional map-driven workflows.
